The trip that marks it, without a speech
A big anniversary is the one trip people most want to get right and most often overload. The instinct is to make everything special, and the effect is a fortnight with no room in it. The good version has two or three moments that could only have happened on this trip, and a lot of unhurried time around them.

What makes this different from a holiday
It is not the budget. It is that the trip is carrying something, and a few decisions upstream determine whether it carries it well.
Two or three moments, not fourteen
The trips people describe years later have a small number of things in them that were clearly arranged and a lot of space in between. A fortnight of arranged things is a schedule, and by day five it is being endured politely. I will push back on a full itinerary, and this is the page where I push hardest.
Going back is a real option, and it has a failure mode
Returning to where you honeymooned is a lovely idea and occasionally a disappointing trip — the hotel has changed hands, the restaurant has gone, the town is busier. Where the place has held up I will say so; where it has not, the better version is usually the same country, a different base, and one deliberate afternoon at the original.
Whether the family comes changes everything
Two people is a romantic trip. Two people plus grown children and their partners is a group trip that happens to be for two people, and the two are planned completely differently — different property, different pace, and a decision about which meals are everybody and which are not. It is worth being honest about this early, including with the family.
A hotel will do a lot, if it is asked properly
Rooms decorated, a private dinner somewhere the restaurant is not, a cake nobody ordered, a boat for an afternoon, the room upgraded because the reason is on the booking. Most of this is free or close to it and almost none of it happens by mentioning it at check-in. It is arranged weeks out, in writing, with the property.
The surprise problem
One person usually wants it to be a surprise and the other usually wants to know what to pack. What works is a surprise about the specifics and honesty about the shape — they know it is ten nights somewhere warm in October, they do not know about the private dinner on the fourth night. I can hold the details and correspond only with you.
Two people who now travel differently
Twenty-five years in, one of you may want to walk all day and the other may not. The good trips build that in rather than pretending it away: a base with something to do for one of you and somewhere to sit for the other, and a couple of days where you do different things and meet for dinner.
Where these work
Places with something worth arranging in them, and enough to do on an afternoon with nothing planned.
Italy, slowly
The most reliable answer, and best in May, June or September. Two bases, a car or a train between them, and long lunches.
- ◆Lake Como and the Dolomites
- ◆Amalfi and Capri, with a boat day
- ◆Tuscany, Florence and a house in the hills
- ◆Puglia for somewhere quieter than all of the above
Japan
For couples who want the trip to feel unlike anywhere they have been. Late March or November, and worth the flight.
- ◆Tokyo, Kyoto and a ryokan with a private onsen
- ◆Kanazawa and the Japanese Alps for the quieter half
- ◆A night at a kaiseki inn, which is the single most memorable dinner most people have
Safari and the Indian Ocean
The classic pairing, and it earns its reputation. A week that is genuinely extraordinary followed by a week of doing nothing.
- ◆Kenya or Tanzania, then Zanzibar or the Seychelles
- ◆Botswana and Cape Town for a more design-led version
- ◆South Africa's Winelands as the soft landing instead of a beach
Somewhere with a train in it
For anniversaries where the journey should be part of it rather than the thing to endure.
- ◆Switzerland — the Glacier Express, Zermatt and Lucerne
- ◆The Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rockies
- ◆Rajasthan by road with a driver, at half the usual pace
When to book
The date is fixed, which is the whole difficulty: there is no flexing into a cheaper week, so the only lever is time.
- 12 months
If the date matters
An anniversary in June or over a holiday period is competing with everybody else's fixed date. The specific room with the view is a small number of rooms, and they go first.
- 6–9 months
Comfortable
Enough time to hold two properties while you decide, and enough for the hotel to actually arrange the things that make it feel marked.
- 3 months
Workable
The destination is still open; the specific suite may not be. This is usually where the honest trade is a better property in a slightly different place.
- Any time
The week either side
If the anniversary falls in a brutal week for weather or price, going a fortnight later and marking the actual day at home is often the better trip. I will say so rather than sell you the expensive week.
What planning it with me involves
I handle
- ◆A shape first — how many bases, how much space, what the two or three moments are
- ◆Properties chosen for the room, not the category, with the occasion on the booking
- ◆The arranged things confirmed in writing with the hotel weeks in advance
- ◆Flights, and an honest answer on whether the premium cabin is worth it on your route
- ◆Upgrades, credits and amenities through preferred-partner programmes
- ◆Dietary requirements on every reservation before you arrive
- ◆The details kept from one of you, if that is the plan
- ◆My number for the whole trip
I don't
- —Filling the days — the empty afternoons are deliberate
- —A party. If the family is coming and it is becoming an event, that is a planner's job and I will say so
- —Anything you would rather arrange yourselves
The first conversation and the proposal are free. If you take the ideas and book them yourself, that is genuinely fine.
Questions people ask
Should we go back to where we honeymooned?+
Sometimes, and it is worth checking rather than assuming. Hotels change hands, towns get busier, and a place remembered at twenty-five is not always the place at fifty. Where it has held up I will tell you; where it has not, the same country with a deliberate afternoon at the original is usually the better trip.
Should the children and grandchildren come?+
Only if you both want them there for the whole thing. A common and very good compromise is a week as a family and a week as two — different properties, and the second week is the one that actually marks the anniversary.
Can you keep it a surprise?+
Yes, and the version that works is a surprise about the specifics rather than the shape. Your partner knows the dates and roughly where; they do not know about the private dinner or the upgrade. I will correspond only with you, and everything that arrives has your name on it.
What can a hotel actually do for an occasion?+
More than people ask for and much of it at no cost: the room prepared, a dinner set up somewhere the restaurant is not, a cake, a boat for an afternoon, and frequently the upgrade because the reason for the trip is on the booking. What it cannot do is arrange any of it well when it hears about it at check-in.
How much should this cost?+
A wide range, and it moves more with the flight and the length than with the hotel. Tell me a number you are comfortable with and I will tell you what it genuinely reaches — and where a little more changes the trip rather than just the invoice.
Tell me the anniversary and roughly when
"Our twenty-fifth, next September, twelve nights, we do not want to move around much" is plenty. I will come back with two or three shapes, priced, and one recommendation with the reason for it.
